Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program Call for Applications
The Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting applications for the Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program. The Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program is an eight-week intensive language course that takes places at colleges and universities across the United States. The program also provides participants with an introduction to American institutions, society and culture. This new program is for currently enrolled undergraduate students and recently graduated persons who demonstrate the potential to become student leaders, or who took on leadership roles during university.
Applications are due to the U.S. Embassy, Cairo by October 15, 2008.
Background Information
This program will provide participants with intensive English language training, including English for academic purposes, as well as the development of general reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and the testing of those skills. Students from Egypt will be placed at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from January 5 to February 27, 2009.
The Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program was developed as part of the U.S. government’s on-going commitment to provide exchange programs to a large and diverse group of persons by providing them with in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture and academic institutions by engaging in substantive academic exchanges at colleges and universities across the U.S.
Who is eligible to apply?
Candidates will be considered without respect to race, color, religion, national origin or gender. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Competition for the Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program is merit-based and open to anyone who:
Is a citizen or national of Egypt, and is residing in Egypt;
Is enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at the time of application at a registered academic institution in his/her country and is in good academic standing or who graduated in 2008. (Part-time students or correspondence students are not eligible.);
Has moderate English language ability (or equivalent TOEFL score of approximately 420, although TOEFL is not required for this program);
Is under 25 years of age during the program;
Submits a complete application with all required documents by the application deadline;
Is able to participate in the eight-week program in the U.S. from January 5 to February 27, 2009;
Is committed to returning to their home country after completion of the program; and
Has a valid passport.
The U.S. Embassy encourages applicants who have shown leadership potential and are involved in their communities.
This program is not open to U.S. green card holders or U.S. citizens.
